Saskia Sassen delivers 2016 Williamson Lecture

On November 16, 2016, the eminent sociologist Dr. Saskia Sassen delivered the Robert C. Williamson Lecture at Lehigh University. Her presentation was entitled "Predatory Capitalism, Human Migration and Habitat Loss in the 21st Century."

Dr. Sassen is an internationally renowned scholar of globalization and the effects of global capital on cities. She is the Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology and Member of The Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University. Her latest book, published by Harvard University Press, is entitled Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy.

The lecture series was endowed by the founding chair of Lehigh's Department of Social Relations (today Sociology & Anthropology), Bob Williamson. A prolific and interdiscplinary scholar, Williamson passed away earlier this month at the age of 100. With the Williamson Lecture we remember Bob and celebrate his legacy, and we are grateful to Dr. Sassen for participating in this year's event, the first held since his death.
