Recently, talk of academic freedom and student safety have become all-consuming on college and university campuses across the US. But what do we mean by “academic freedom”? And what do we mean by “student safety”? This talk will consider these questions within the context of current events and then ask, as students and educators, what are our rights and what are our responsibilities? And what can we do now?

Maura Finkelstein is an anthropologist who was recently fired from her tenured position by Muhlenberg College for reposting a social media message that was anti-Zionist. She has been nominated for a Pushcart (2021), was a finalist for the Witness literary award (2022), was a Tin House Scholar (2023), and was recently the recipient of the 2024 New Directions Award from the American Anthropological Association and the 2024 Courageous Voices Fellowship from the Freedom and Justice Institute.

Event co-sponsored by Sociology & Anthropology, English, History, Political Science, global Studies and the Center for Global Islamic Studies
