Dr Samantha Fox, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, was awarded a Paul J. Franz Fellowship research award for the 2025-26 academic year. The award will support Fox's ongoing research into sustainable shrinkage and green urbanism in the former East Germany. This includes fieldwork in Eisenhüttenstadt, a former socialist New Town and architectural heritage site that is poised to become the world's first carbon-neutral steel manufacturing city by 2050, as well as support for Fox's forthcoming monograph, The Afterlife of Utopia: Urban Renewal in Germany's Model Socialist City, which will be published by Cornell University Press in early 2026.
