All Faculty, Staff, and Students are invited to join the Department of Sociology & Anthropology for a welcome reception honoring Dr. Dhiraj Murthy.

Dr. Murthy recently joined our faculty as a full professor and the new Lucy G. Moses Distinguished Professor of Sociology.  He also has a courtesy affiliation with  the College of Health. He has a Ph.D. from University of Cambridge as well as degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Bristol. He brings extensive expertise in social media, health misinformation and AI.  He joins us from the University of Texas at Austin, where he established The Computational Media Lab.  Dr. Murthy will be establishing a new lab here at Lehigh.

  • Date: Thursday, September 3, 2026
  • Time: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
  • Location: Williams Hall, Roemmele Global Commons
  • Details: Light refreshments (vegetarian and vegan) and bubble tea will be served.

This reception provides an opportunity to welcome Dr. Murthy to our academic community and discuss his ongoing research and teaching initiatives.  He is also interested in talking to students, especially those who may want to work in the lab.

Before Dr Murthy’s appointment, the most recent SOAN holder of the position was Dr Cameron Wesson, who had also served as interim dean of CAS before accepting a provost position at Franklin & Marshall in 2019.

Lucy Goldschmidt Moses was a dedicated New Yorker and philanthropist who supported a wide range of philanthropic interests.  She personally established the endowed chair position in 1973, with Dr Linton Freeman as the first recipient of the title.  At the time of her passing in 1996, at the age of 103, her obituary noted that she (with her husband) had donated tens of millions of dollars to many causes, including preservation, the arts, hospitals and public health, and academia. The Sociology and Anthropology Department is honored to have received an endowment for this chair position.
